Two years ago today I woke up early after a night in the van with many wind gusts. I got a message from a friend on my phone telling me there was a fire that started on Slater Ridge as a tree fell into an electric line because of the wind. She said it was out Indian Creek Road near Luther Gulch.
Luther Gulch - the name rang a bell. That was where my daughter lived! They rented one of Ken's Creekside Cabins. I phoned my daughter and she told me they were already told to evacuate, and they were gathering things together at that moment. A half-hour later, and they were in my front yard.
What we didn't know then was that because of the wind the fire would quickly burn up everything in the Indian Creek watershed, destroying about 200 homes. About two hours after my daughter got to my home, I was having to evacuate as the fire was almost there. It had traveled about six miles very quickly. My home burned later that night as did my son's. At the time he lived across the street from me.
I have been displaced ever since. I have no house... but I'm making my home in a 30' travel trailer which is parked on my property. I would like to have a house built here, but because of my financial situation I'm feeling destitute, though not entirely without hope. It is a matter of waiting and trying to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
Meanwhile, in the last month there have been two more devastating fires in nearby communities in our county. The post-fire PTSD is real.
