Review: John Adams

John Adams John Adams by David McCullough
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A phenomenal biography of a good Christian man.

This good Christian man also happened to be the second President of the United States, right after George Washington. I loved learning about his life in far more detail than anything else I've ever read about him. David McCullough was a great biographer.

John and Abigail Adams lived in a farmhouse in a small town south of Boston. John, an attorney, had strong views about independence for the American colonies so he served on the Continental Congress representing Massachusetts in 1774 and again in 1776. He was a strong proponent of a "Declaration of Independence" and was one of the men who bravely signed.

By reading this book I also learned more about George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and others, including Adams' firstborn son, John Quincy Adams, who served as the sixth President of the United States.

It was a great book. The strong Christian example of Adams and his wife Abigail inspired me. They were devoted to each other and were very much anti-slavery. That made me wonder how Abigail managed the family farm while John was away for years at a time serving the country as an ambassador to France and other countries across the pond.

This is altogether a wonderful book to read if you want to know more about early United States history.
