Gunshot in the Night

Tonight I'm here, still awake, at 1am - and out there somewhere was something that sounded exactly like a gunshot, and I have to wonder, why? What was being shot at? Why only one shot? Around here it could have been someone trying to scare a bear or mountain lion away. Seems like this same thing happened just a couple of nights ago.

Two nights ago I forgot to bring in the cat food at sunset, and when I opened the kitchen door to get it, a little skunk was having his fill of easy free food. I judiciously shut the door and let him have at it. Later I went out to get the rest and tossed the food in the trash and washed the bowls. I have to stop doing that to myself. It makes me wonder where this skunk and his family live. I'm suspecting the thicket behind the shed. There are thick brambles and honeysuckle. Plenty of privacy for a skunk family, I suppose. I don't think they're under my mobile home because the skirting seems very effective and I had plumbing work done a week ago, and the plumber said nothing about seeing skunks under there. You would think he'd mention that if there were something like that to report.

I have a project going on in the side yard, in sector 7. That's just outside my living room windows. I want to cover all the old lawn with cardboard, and on that put new dirt to grow flowers in. I want a flower garden, not a lawn. The plan is great except there was no way to go shopping in Yreka this spring due to coronavirus so I didn't have enough dirt to make it work. I will continue to work on this over the course of the next few years and hope that eventually I'll have enough there that it will be absolutely beautiful in the springtime.

Gardening Day

Today is a great day to catch up on the lawn mowing. Yes, I'm still working on taxation issues, but once in a while I need to get up and go outside, and when I do, the lawn comes to mind. I've divided the property into 14 sectors and want to do one sector daily, repeating that in the last half of the month. However, because of the Fourth of July and book club and other activities I got off track. This morning I finally did the job on sectors 4 and 5 which are adjacent to my mobile home. Can't say I completed the job... there's still more to do there this afternoon - but great start! Goodbye to the Dandelion Forest!

Today, on the 9th of the month I should be doing the first backyard sector, but am not there yet. Also, not really worried about it. I can double up again tomorrow. This afternoon I want to finish sectors 4 and 5 and do something about sector 8. Confusing if you can't see it I guess... but means something to me. Sector 8 is between the shed and the mobile home. There are some terribly overgrown areas in this sector. All I can do is keep trying. Tomorrow I can finish sector 8 and move on to sectors 9 and 10 in the big backyard.

I took the photos last winter before the trees got their leaves.

Taxation Station

I admit it. I waited to do my taxes at the last minute. Now I have one week left. I'm surprised I know other people who did the same thing. I guess a lot of people are tax-avoidant personalities. Right now it looks like I owe money. I'm still working to find more deductions and put them in the right places in the online form, but I'm done for tonight. I made a lot of progress today. Self-employment income/expenses are my issue. Checking and double checking everything. I was surprised to see I earned more money this year than last year. That's a positive sign.

Morning Musings

Beautiful morning. Morgan was there to meet me on the back porch when I took the cats' food bowls out. Robie was nowhere in sight. I made my coffee and turned on the heater to take the chill out of the room. Still doesn't feel warm enough unless you stand right next to it. I will go take a shower then get ready to head into town. I'm going to the local book club meeting. I have no idea what they're reading. I think my friend said it was something by Wilbur Smith. I haven't met with them since March or the beginning of April. I used to go every week.

A New Time Management Method

I'm trying so hard to fit more actions into my days. Of necessity I've added a lot of gardening into my routines. Now I need to add back in things like journaling, writing, and art table time. I'm desperate.

I created a new daily time tracker sheet using Word. A piece of paper listing all the things I want to do in a day. Something to remind me what else can be done, aside from time wasting. I honestly believe that the more I organize my thoughts, the more I'll get done.

I could post a copy of my activity tracker page, but it is personal to my goals for my time, so I'll not do that. I'll just say I'm using Word, adding tables with my lists in them. I'm printing only one page daily because it is bound to change as I adjust my goals and expectations.

The Mop Bucket

Yesterday I got the mop bucket I ordered. This is a big commercial quality mop bucket - the one I've always wanted. Why? Because it is easy to use, easy to move from one room to another, and it gets the job done. I'm 67 now, and feeling too old to deal with mop buckets that are small and ineffective, that leave you with a mop that needs to be wrung out and cleaned at the end. Enough already. I got this one:

A big industrial quality mop bucket on big strong wheels.

Unfortunately the heavy duty commercial quality mop I ordered is lost in transit. Maybe I'll get it today. I don't know. Last I saw, the tracking data said they received it in Oakland on the day it was originally supposed to be delivered. I'm sure it will arrive eventually, and to be honest, I'm not in that much of a hot hurry to mop floors.

The Big Bookcase

Yesterday I spent hours assembling a big bookcase and today I stood it up and put books in it. This is almost all the books I have with me. The rest are still in storage in Idaho.

Planning the Day

What needs to be done today? I have a calendar on my desk. Before I go to sleep at night I use that to write down a few things that need to be done the next day. Three or four action items, that will be plenty. Writing on this blog was not one of those things today.

A New Month

I've had a few difficult days. My mobile home developed a plumbing disaster. The man who fixed it worked about six hours trying to find the problem. It appeared to be grease. I don't cook with grease. No telling how long that had been there. I've lived here only a few months. In any case, it is fixed.

Today I wanted to film my video for the end of month reading wrapup but wow.. then the bookcase I ordered arrived, and I want to assemble it in the place where I normally make my videos. So now that project awaits me. I should go do it right now.

Sometimes it feels so good to start over, and it is a great blessing that we can do that every month.

Two Kinds of Sorrow

Sorrow. We've all felt it, right? One kind of sorrow builds us spiritually and the other type of sorrow leads to spiritual death. The difference is in repentance. What leads to repentance is humility. The opposite of humility is pride. A prideful, resentful attitude leads to spiritual death.

Bible verse of the day:

"For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death."
- 2 Corinthians 7:10

Gratitudes:

1. I'm grateful to have a place to call home.

2. I'm grateful to be entrusted with land to take care of.

3. I'm grateful to be alive and worshiping God.

Open Hearts

If our hearts aren't open to Jesus, how can He reach inside and help us through our difficult times? If we are hard hearted and close ourselves off from Him, that is our choice, not His fault. He wants everyone to be saved.

"Please open your hearts to us. We have not done wrong to anyone, nor led anyone astray, nor taken advantage of anyone."
- 2 Corinthians 7:2

Gratitudes:

Sanctification

The process of sanctification is something that surprised me when I became a Christian in 2013, at the age of 61. Like a lot of people I already thought I was "a good person" as there were a lot of sins I hadn't committed, but during the weeks following my decision to give my life to Jesus, the Holy Spirit reminded me of many incidents in my past that I needed to ask forgiveness for.

While looking for quotes on "cleansing" and "sanctification" this morning I came across one that said we should cleanse ourselves. I had to disagree. We don't have the insight to cleanse ourselves, but with God's wisdom and help we can be cleansed. This is sanctification. This is what it takes to be made holy.

Sanctification isn't an easy or pleasant process but it is a step we take to be reconciled to the Lord and His purpose for our lives. Seeking His forgiveness for our past errors will open the door to a blessed future.

Bible verse of the day:

"Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God."
- 2 Corinthians 7:1

Gratitudes:

1. I'm grateful for a peaceful morning.

2. I'm grateful for the gift of hearing.

3. I'm grateful for my solitude.

2. Bible reading: Psalms, Proverbs. ✓

3. Booktube.

4. Read 2 chapters of I Capture the Castle.

5. Read (listen to) 2 chapters of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires.

6. Clean the east wall in the bedroom I'm planning to paint.

7. Clean the bathroom door to get it ready to paint.

Quote of the day:

"We don't enjoy the cleansing; sometimes we even opt for the dirt over the ice cream. 'I can eat dirt if I want to!' we pout and proclaim. Which is true—we can. But if we do, the loss is ours. God has a better offer."
― Max Lucado, Just Like Jesus

What Next?

It has occurred to me that I could write more here - just about my daily life. Make it more interesting for a reader, and less routine for me. I have been falling into a daily tradition here that is not creative and not ultimately for my own good. So I'm going to switch this up a bit and make it a little different each day.

This is a fun sort of Booktube tag video I filmed a few days ago.

Kindle Fire 10 :: Kindle Paperwhite

Bible verses of the day:

"And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said:
'I will live in them
and walk among them.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
Therefore, come out from among unbelievers,
and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord.
Don’t touch their filthy things,
and I will welcome you.
And I will be your Father,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty.'"
- 2 Corinthians 6:16-18

Gratitudes:

1. I'm grateful to be up and awake today. The sun is shining.

Kindles: Paperwhite vs. Fire 10

Kindle Fire 10 :: Kindle Paperwhite

Bible verses of the day:

"Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?"

Reconciliation

Bible verses of the day:

"And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ." - 2 Corinthians 5:18-21

Gratitudes:

1. I'm grateful for the opportunity for reconciliation.

2. I'm grateful God loves me despite all my errors in life.

3. I'm grateful to have the yarn to start my book blanket.

Quote of the day:

"Forgiving and being reconciled to our enemies or our loved ones are not about pretending that things are other than they are. It is not about patting one another on the back and turning a blind eye to the wrong. True reconciliation exposes the awfulness, the abuse, the hurt, the truth. It could even sometimes make things worse. It is a risky undertaking but in the end it is worthwhile, because in the end only an honest confrontation with reality can bring real healing. Superficial reconciliation can bring only superficial healing."
― Desmond Tutu

Why I Am No Longer a Full-Time Vandweller

Bible verse of the day:

"So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!" - 2 Corinthians 5:16-17

New Life in Christ

Bible verse of the day:

"If it seems we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God. And if we are in our right minds, it is for your benefit. Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life. He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them." - 2 Corinthians 5:13-15

Gratitudes:

1. I'm grateful to be a Christian.

Good vs. Evil

Where did the problem of evil begin?
